super power panto - extant/simply smiley productions - 2023

This was my first solo set design and build project. Super Power Panto is a collaborative project between Extant Ltd. the UK's leading company of visually impaired artists and theatre practitioners, and Simply Smiley Productions, and all year round children's panto company. The brief for the set was a giant pop-up comic, that changes pages for each new scene, the scenes being a black and white city, a park with an observatory, inside the observatory, and a panto style kitchen.

It was a fun challenge to build the structure of the book, and to make it easy for the team to set up and take down, as this was a touring show. With the show not only including blind and visually impaired actors, but also audiences, it needed to be made so that it was accessible and safe. This is one of the reasons you may notice the weights with handles in the bottom corners, this was to aid those with visual impairments in the turning of the books pages. The shows run included a touch tour for those with visual impairments, meaning that the book was made to have many 3D elements, including black raised outlines around the images on the pages, and different textural elements. I also made many of the props for the show, including part of the telescope (with help from my assistant Marcus Forde) and the blackbird puppets.

The show was featured on ITV News Midlands.
